A Prayer Habit

Romans 12:2 (NIV)  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

I have a Biology background and have even done some work in neuroscience, so the brain fascinates me. I am interested in forming mental habits that help with our spiritual lives.  When we talk about loving God with all of our mind it is in context of not sinning in our thought life.  When we mention Romans 12:2 we often are making comments about removing evil from our mental processes.  But I feel that is only have the picture.  We need to hold every thought captive making sure our minds don’t stray but we also need to build good habits as well.  We need to actively think about the good, honorable and noble things of this world so that are minds are being completely renewed.

We know the hard work it takes to develop our muscles into an actively healthy body.  There are two sides to the development.  There are two pieces to being healthy.  The first is eating right; making sure what we put into our body is good.  The second is exercising; making sure what we do with our body is good.  They are two sides to the same coin.  It is the same way with a healthy mind.  We need to monitor our thoughts making sure that we are not dwelling on evil.  We also need to exercise our thoughts with good things.  Doing these two things can create a brain and mind that are renewed making our lives transformed.

What would your life be like if it was hard to think about evil?  If lust was something your mind was not used to?  If hate was an abnormal concept?  If jealousy was foreign?  What would your life be like if thinking about peace, love, righteousness were more natural?  What would your life be like if you renewed you mind in such a way that God was who you thought about more often than not?

Creating the habit of prayer in your life by regularly praying is a good first step in the right direction toward a renewed mind and a transformed life.
