Praying for Success

1 Chronicles 4:10 (NIV) Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.

At one point I believe this one obscure verse may have received too much attention.  There were books, conferences and Bible studies developed from it.  I hope I can avoid any hype that may have been caused but there are couple interesting notes to point out from this prayer.  Jabez asks some simple things.  I want to focus on his one request for his territory to be enlarged.  He wanted more land.  I make the cultural assumption that Jabez was some type of farmer.  In my mind it doesn’t matter if he were in crops or livestock.  This is a pretty safe assumption since most of humanity at the time of Jabez were farmers.  More land at this time was a sign of wealth and success.  It would also give Jabez the ability to do more, either work harder, plant more crops, raise more animals or hire more workers.  In an agrarian society a request for more territory was a request for financial and business success.  Jabez was asking God to make his work successful and to provide him with the resources to be even more successful.

Maybe you spend your day providing cheap, convenient, somewhat nutritious food options for those in a hurry with exceptional customer service.  Is that something you can pray that God helps you with?  Maybe you spend your day answering the questions of telephone clients trying to match your company’s products with their financial needs.   Is that something you can pray that God helps you with?  Spend some time with God asking Him about what part of your job He wants you to be successful at.  Maybe it is not going to be about the job itself but about the preparation and experience your receive.  God wants to be involved in your work life through prayer.  Take some time to find out how.

Do you pray to God for success in what you do for a living?  Why or why not?

Do you think it matters to God?

Do you think God wants to bless you with success?

If you can not ask God to help you at work do you really think it is something you should be doing?

If you were successful at your job would that be good for God’s kingdom?
