Asking God to Bless Us

35 Days Toward PEACE – Week 1 Prayer (Day 4)

The goal of this devotional is to develop the spiritual disciplines and habits over the next 35 days that will allow the PEACE of Jesus Christ to change our lives for the better.  Is that what you want?  Are you willing to join me in the journey?  If so let’s begin.

The first step of our journey is prayer.  Prayer is simply talking to God.  Prayer is best learned by praying and by hearing others pray.  But maybe you have never really talked to God before in your life.  Maybe you have only heard others to to God.  Maybe you are extremely scared to say the wrong thing.  So we are going to begin praying simply by saying a model prayer Jesus gave us in the Bible.  Below is what is often called the Lord’s Prayer.  It was spoken by Jesus to His disciples as instruction on how to pray.  Quietly sit down and say it out loud to God as if you were talking to Him.

Matthew 6 : 9 – 13 (NIV)This, then, is how you should pray:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Again today we want to start our prayer by letting God know that we think He is amazing.  Is there something for which you can praise God?  Let Him know how awesome you think He is.

Then we want to deal with anything we have done recently that may have hurt our relationship with Him.  Are there any sins that you need to ask God to forgive you for?

Then, today, we want to think about asking God to bless us.  God is both an all-powerful God and an all-loving God.  He can do whatever He wants to do and He always wants to do what is best for our eternal good.  This is an awesome truth.  God’s power and love are the basis of any prayer.  (If you have trouble thinking about anything to praise God for, His power and love are two easy things to acknowledge.)  Since, God is strong enough to do great things and loving enough to do great things for us we should not be afraid to ask Him to do things that would bless us.  Is there something that you physically need?  Take a moment right now to ask God to bless you with it.  Is there something you spiritually need?  Again ask God for it?  (I would recommend you write down your requests to God.  It is always good to have a reminder of what you have asked Him for.)

There is one qualifier that I must mention.  God is also all-knowing.  God knows exactly what is best for us.  So sometimes we will get confused when God gives what He knows we need instead of giving us what we asked for and thought we needed.

As we prayed today we worshiped God, asked for forgiveness of our sins and asked God to bless us.  That was day four.  Next is day five.
