Asking God to Bless Others

35 Days Toward PEACE – Week 1 Prayer (Day 5)

The goal of this devotional is to develop the spiritual disciplines and habits over the next 35 days that will allow the PEACE of Jesus Christ to change our lives for the better.  Is that what you want?  Are you willing to join me in the journey?  If so let’s begin.

The first step of our journey is prayer.  Prayer is simply talking to God.  Prayer is best learned by praying and by hearing others pray.  But maybe you have never really talked to God before in your life.  Maybe you have only heard others to to God.  Maybe you are extremely scared to say the wrong thing.  So we are going to begin praying simply by saying a model prayer Jesus gave us in the Bible.  Below is what is often called the Lord’s Prayer.  It was spoken by Jesus to His disciples as instruction on how to pray.  Quietly sit down and say it out loud to God as if you were talking to Him.

Matthew 6 : 9 – 13 (NIV)This, then, is how you should pray:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Again today we want to start our prayer by letting God know that we think He is amazing.  Is there something for which you can praise God?  Let Him know how awesome you think He is.

Then we want to deal with anything we have done recently that may have hurt our relationship with Him.  Are there any sins that you need to ask God to forgive you for?

Hopefully, you wrote down the things you asked God to bless you with yesterday.  Take some time to ask Him for those same things again today.  If you have thought of anything new you may want to ask God for feel free to add them to the list.

When we look at the world there are definitely things we think need to be changed.  God not only needs to help us but there are a lot of others God needs to help.  Sometimes they are individual friends with personal problems.  Sometimes they are large scale natural disasters.  Sometimes they are things a huge human evil and indifference.  Take a moment and thing about something particular about the world around you that is not like heaven.  What do you think God should change?  Specifically asked God to change some part of your world so that it looks more like they way things should be.  Again, write that request down so that it is easier for you to remember what and how you are asking God to bless others.

So, today our prayer has consisted of praising God, asking Him to forgive our sin,  asking Him to bless us and to bless others.  Tomorrow, we will focus on the last aspect of prayer that I want to highlight.  If you have been able to consistently track with us so far, you have prayed for five days in a row.  Tomorrow will be day number 6.
