Thanking God for His Blessings

35 Days Toward PEACE – Week 1 Prayer (Day 6)

The goal of this devotional is to develop the spiritual disciplines and habits over the next 35 days that will allow the PEACE of Jesus Christ to change our lives for the better.  Is that what you want?  Are you willing to join me in the journey?  If so let’s begin.

The first step of our journey is prayer.  Prayer is simply talking to God.  Prayer is best learned by praying and by hearing others pray.  But maybe you have never really talked to God before in your life.  Maybe you have only heard others to to God.  Maybe you are extremely scared to say the wrong thing.  So we are going to begin praying simply by saying a model prayer Jesus gave us in the Bible.  Below is what is often called the Lord’s Prayer.  It was spoken by Jesus to His disciples as instruction on how to pray.  Quietly sit down and say it out loud to God as if you were talking to Him.

Matthew 6 : 9 – 13 (NIV)This, then, is how you should pray:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Again today we want to start our prayer by letting God know that we think He is amazing.  Is there something for which you can praise God?  Let Him know how awesome you think He is.

Then we want to deal with anything we have done recently that may have hurt our relationship with Him.  Are there any sins that you need to ask God to forgive you for?

Hopefully, you wrote down the things you asked God to bless.  Take some time to ask Him for those same things again today.  If you have thought of anything new you may want to ask God for feel free to add them to the list.  Also include those ways you are asking God to bless others and the world from yesterday.

The final piece of our conversation with God is thanksgiving.  God has done and will do great things in you life.  Some of those things will be in direct response to our requests.  Has God specifically answered any of your requests yet?  If He has take a moment to thank Him for it.  God will also bless us with things that we do not ask for.  How has God blessed you recently?  Take a moment to specifically thank God for some of the blessings in your life.  Thanking God is important because it help us not to take His goodness to us for granted.  But thanking Him also helps us remember how good He is and gives us confidence that He will be good to us in the future.  When God answers your prayers you will grow in confidence about what you can ask God to do for you in prayer.  Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past helps us to rely on God’s faithfulness in the future.

Now each day we will visit these five things over and over again in our daily conversations with God.

  1. We will praise God for who He is.
  2. We will ask God to forgive us of our sins.
  3. We will ask God to bless us.
  4. We will ask God to bless others.
  5. We will thank God for the good things He has done for us.

Hopefully, during the remainder of this devotional we will be able to make praying those five things a lifelong habit.  This is day six and look how much we have already done.  Tomorrow will be one whole week!
