Bearing Fruit

35 Days Toward PEACE – Week 4 Discipleship (Day 27)

The goal of this devotional is to develop the spiritual disciplines and habits over the next 35 days that will allow the PEACE of Jesus Christ to change our lives for the better.  Is that what you want?  Are you willing to join me in the journey?

As we continue to develop our daily conversation with God we are going to spend this week talking about becoming more like Christ.  The “C” in PEACE is fro the Challenge to be like Christ.  Becoming like Christ is process mediated by the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives.  As we open ourselves up to the God’s work in our lives and the Holy Spirit gains more and more access to the whole of who we are, we change.  We become more like Christ.  A daily part of our process should be evaluating where we are as it come to our “Christ-like-ness.”  How are you doing?  what specific part of you are you trying to change to look more like Him?  Over the next seven days we are going to look at Christ, what it means to be “Christ-like,” look at specific things that need to change in us and focus our prayers around those changes.

John 15:8 (NIV) This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Galatians 5:22 + 23 (NIV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

I only listed three verses today.  Take the time to read those verses several time.  Try to memorize the list of the fruit of the Spirit.  There is a song in the Youtube video below that will help.  If we are to show ourselves to be Christ’s disciples we will bear fruit.  In Galatians Paul list what fruit the Holy Spirit bears in our lives.  Look at each of those descriptors carefully and evaluate your life.  We talked about love yesterday.   Are you a loving person, loving as the Bible defines it?  Do you have joy?  Do you have peace?  Are you kind?  Are you good?  Do you have patience?  Are you faithful, gentle?  Are you self-controlled?  Which of these would you say is your strength?  Which of these would be you greatest weakness?

Over the last several days you have been asking God in prayer to help you in one specific aspect of your discipleship.  Does that request relate to one or more of the fruit of the Spirit?

If you have been working through this with a partner ask them to evaluate your life based on these characteristics.  If not find someone who is close to you and ask them.

Watch the following YouTube video.  You must of sing along with this.  You must.  I know it is intended for kids but it will help you remember what the fruit of the Spirit is.  And at some point during the day I will guarantee you will be singing this song in your head and it will help you actually connect the fruit of the Spirit to what you are doing.

Hopefully watching that video brought a small bit of joy into your life and now let’s go to the Lord in prayer.

  1. Praise God for who He is.
  2. Ask God to forgive us of our sins.
  3. Ask God to help you in a specific area to become more like Christ.
  4. Ask God to bless others.
  5. Thank God for how His Holy Spirit working on and in us changes us for the better.
