Designed to be Workers

Work-Ship – Week Five:  Humanity as Workers – Day Thirty-Two:  Designed to be Workers

We have discovered that God created us to work and then commands us to work.  It is quite fortunate for us that God has also designed us to work.  We are put together by God in such a way that work is with in our power.  Our bodies and minds are uniquely fashioned to be able to perform work within the very universe in which we exist.  We are able to understand our surroundings in such a way that we can decide on what results are desired.  We are able to intentionally manipulate our surroundings in such a way to at times produce our desired change.  Michael J. Denton in his book Nature’s Destiny describes our design in these words on page 235.

In which it is argued that our species may be uniquely fit to explore and understand the cosmos and that the laws of nature appear also to be uniquely fit for large organic forms of our size and dimension.  The evidence is not conclusive, but highly suggestive.  Our species exhibits a set of adaptations which are collectively unique among carbon-based life forms on earth.  These include high intelligence, linguistic ability, the hand, high-acuity vision, the upright stance, sociability.  Moreover, the design and dimensions of the human body are fit for the handling of fire–a crucial ability, because it was only through the conquest of fire that humans discovered metals, developed technology and science, and ultimately came to comprehend the laws of nature and grasp the overall structure of the cosmos.  Many coincidences appear to underlie our fitness for handling fire and our fitness for understanding the cosmos.

 Psalm 139:13 – 16 makes it clear that a human being’s design is exactly dependent upon God’s work.  God made us to be exactly who we are.  This is both as individuals and a collective.  We are who God designed us to be.

Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV)

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

So as you work, know that you’re working in general is part of God’s design.  As you work, know that it is possible to be specifically working exactly as God intended you to be.  Your work showed flow from God’s design of us as human beings and from God’s specific design for you as an individual.  You will never be called by God to do work that is impossible for you.  You will never be asked by God to do something that cannot be done.  You will never be asked by God to do work that you cannot complete.  Your assignment may stretch your abilities to the very edge of possible but they will never exceed the design God has placed on you.  God made you and will use you in the way you are designed to be used.
